2020 ASEAN-KOREA Innovative Culture Forum: Encounters

Overview

Encounters, a special exhibition presented as part of the 2020 ASEAN-ROK Culture Innovation Summit, introduces the work of three artists from Malaysia, Singapore, and Korea. In line with the forum’s ambition to propose an innovative vision through the diverse cultural exchanges between Korea and ASEAN member states, the exhibition brings together works that embody ‘encounters’ which transcend the barriers of geographical region, mediums and perspectives.

Malaysian female artist Yee I-Lann’s TIKAR/MEJA is a series of 50 woven items that were created in partnership with the indigenous residents of Sabah. Through large woven artworks created over a period of several months, Yee brings to life the region’s historical memories and contradictions. This social collaboration project, which has now established itself as a key source of economic income for residents, provides local women who have thus far been alienated both socially and economically with not only the opportunity to create art but also a new value system. In the meantime, Ho Tzu Nyen’s The 49th Hexagram underscores the significance of the numerous uprisings that recurred throughout the 20thcentury Korean history, through the engagements with historical archives, cultural artefacts and philosophical text. Through the embroidered collage of faces of statues from around the world (Korea, England, France, China and Southeast Asia) and those of ordinary citizens, Young In Hong’s Double Encounter dissembles the power structures reflected on historical memorials while posing questions about Korea’s social order and how it is expressed.
