My name is Pawimol Samsen, or Tete.I’m the founder of 27JUNE studio, a creative technology and experience design studio based in Bangkok, Thailand. You might be curious why we chose the name 27JUNE. Actually, it’s because the two founders who are Chayanon and I, were born on the same day. Chayanon is a tech person, and I am a creative person, so basically, our work is a combination of creativity and technology. We think that technology is a good tool for us to expand our ability to create our works.Sometimes we would like to create something that seems very magical, and technology gets rid of any limitations and can help us achieve what we want.

We also mainly use interactive technology in most of our projects as we believe that it will attract people to interact with our works. To make it happen, we work with a real-time graphic software like Touchdesigner, Resolume, and Unreal engine.

A good example is our very first projection mapping performance that tells a poem about time and presence. We encourage people to be performers.

When they enter the designated space and move their body, the motion graphics of themselves are generated in real-time and projected on the wall. In this way, people have more engagement with the story of the poem.

We apply this interactive approach to the Thai culture industry as well because we believe that the best way to preserve something is not to keep it the way it is but to improve it and find a way to accommodate it and make it live in the present day.

We’ve done the project with Thai Song Dam, which is a small tribe in Thailand. Normally, during their traditional celebrations, they dance around a bamboo sculpture that they've made together.

What we've done is integrate a sound-reactive technology with their traditional bamboo sculpture so that the lights in the bamboo interact with the music while they are dancing.The result is that it enhances both the performers' and audiences' experiences.

We use the sound-reactive technology with other projects as well, but in this case, as you can see on the screen, we use a projector to project the interactive graphics on the handpan and Ranard, which is a Thai musical instrument.

It did a great job as usual. Unexpectedly, the musician told us that when he saw the visuals, he could feel the movements, and the way he played the music changed according to the visuals.

So, it's more like a feedback loop between the visuals, music and performer. I do agree with crazy monkey (Le Thanh Tung) that technology can definitely change arts and culture.  It is a powerful tool to create new possibilities, new experience.

It doesn't to be on 2D canvas anymore. It can be on any creative space, like any surface or form like fabric, music instrument, mirror, or even people. And I think the ability of technology can create unprecedented experience and new culture with respect to the traditional one.

27JUNE studio is a Bangkok-based multidisciplinary design studio where technology and design are synchronised to create an immersive experience. We do projection mapping, creative coding, AR, VR, interactive art, performance art and so on. We might seem like we are all about tech but don't get us wrong, we are not a tech company. We believe that technology is just a medium for us to communicate with people. We like to express ourselves through immersive experiences and create a space for people to speak, to play, to share, and to express themselves. In other words, people are at the centre of our work.
