Hello, ASEAN-ROK Culture Innovation Summit. I am Tri Minh, artist from Hanoi Vietnam. I am electronic musicians, also, composer. I graduated from Hanoi Conservatory of Music. I started from the 90s, I started to collaborate and work with various artists from other world and also artists in Vietnam.

And at my musical growth, I acknowledge that tradition, culture, heritage, have a very big influence on my musical development. That’s why I started to incorporate a lot of traditional instruments into my music compositions.

I think at this time, cultural heritage takes very important role in the 21st century to identify culture background of each culture and also it’s distinguishing artists from different countries especially in ASEAN, where culture’s very diverse. And I think this is the trend at this moment, at least in Vietnam.

When I started to incorporate traditional elements into my musical compositions; one thing, for me, very important is the preservations of cultural heritage. Because it’s very thin line between blending the traditional aspect or put traditional cultural heritage into a wrong place in the compositions.

That’s why when I started to compose music, I put a lot of effort and time to study about each category of culture and heritage of musical genre. And I have collaborated not only artists in Vietnam, but also artists from Thailand, Malaysia, that bring this into the new level or new directions of compositions.

My genre is focused more in electronic music and contemporary music, but when the traditional artists put the creation into this, they also contribute their own creations and also their own cultural background into the compositions. For me, this is very important that we preserve the cultural heritage of our own in the compositions. I worked trying and experimenting with traditional musician for quite some time and luckily at this very moment, young people in the more pop culture started to experimenting a lot of traditional music into their pop, a young pop composition.

I think this is very good trend in this moment because when the young people start to put their thoughts and creations with the traditional music, into their production, it will make the youth generations understand more about their roots and their culture. Also, make their production standout from the mass products of pop and culture around the world and also make them standout in the Asian perspective. I think this is the development that will make them being proud of their culture.

I think when the pop, production of pop songs, that has the tradition elements, then pop singer or a young pop singer, they would try to or would understand and they would capture the cultural heritage of the development.

I think this will contribute to their longer-term development in the future, also in the international perspective. As of the beginning of 2020 and when COVID struck, we, as artists were grounded and then of course nothing stopped artists from composition or creating.

When we have a lot of time in our hand, we started to do a lot of experimenting and one other thing I think is very interesting is, across borders into collaborations. This very moment, we, as a Vietnamese artist started to have online platform with artists not only in Asia but also across borders to Europe. I think this is a very interesting and this is kind of start of innovations in a way that brought the Western culture close to or interact with Asian culture.

In ASEAN perspective, we have a lot of cultural elements and I think this creations of culture innovations will make a new product, very interesting.

This is also a way to fight COVID and to make something goof out of COVID apparent.

As of now, artists around the world suffering the COVID. And I think most of artists will take this time as a time to create more and I take this opportunity to create my new project called “Moonlight.” This is a project about bringing or putting cultural heritage into new perspective. All of the compositions is more toward the electronic music or ambient electric music but on the traditional elements were recorded, and created about 10 years ago with the Artisans from Vietnam.

We have been working with this for quite some time and we take advantage of this time and finalize our works. This is a showcase or bringing the traditional music put it or collaborating with more music now, meaning electric music. We will try to, on our aim is to outreach to more young audience who more familiar with electric music and I think this will help our creation to reach closer to the younger audience and also help to preserve cultural heritage to longer-term.

As of 2020 COVID made nearly all artists grounded and at first it’s a huge impact on the artist, especially indie artists, like myself. But we try to make the most out of it and make a challenge to ourselves and I think this is also a good time to take a step back and review our music or cultural innovations: review it and see where it can lead to and try to build some new ideas.

Beside my current project, we also started to talk to artists from Japan, for example, collaborate with artists from Japan also from Europe. This is a tool or it’s a way for artists to fight and take advantage of the COVID.

I think COVID have a huge impact on culture but it cannot stop cultural innovations, and I think there’s also good time for indie or artists like myself and others to start to create something more interesting and more innovations.

ASEAN-ROK Culture Innovation Summit, for me, is a very interesting culture platform which help artists to, first of all, connect; also try to create a platform where artist can collaborate and create something innovative. I think the role of constitutions and platform like ASEAN-ROK Culture Innovation Summit, is very important where we can talk to each other, understand each other’s culture and try to find a way to collaborate and create something unique in this COVID time and be prepare for after COVID.

I think after this fear of time, a lot of interesting products will start to happen and I think it would have a lot of interesting cultural innovations and I think in the next editions of our Culture Innovation Summit, there would be a lot of interesting culture; creations will be presented.

I am very thankful to take part in this Culture Innovation Summit, and I think ASEAN-ROK Culture Innovation Summit will help artist like me and also many others to connect to each other and thanks again ASEAN-ROK Culture Innovation Summit to give me this chance to speak to the international audience, Asian audience, and I hope we can have a real-time meeting in the next editions. Since the beginning of 90s, after graduated from Hanoi Conservatory of Music as Excellent in composing degree, Tri Minh, together with some other young musicians started to play Jazz music in various locations in Hanoi. After a period of improvising with Jazz music, Tri Minh has started to explore his territory in electronic music.

Started in 1999, Tri Minh has begun to compose and perform as a solo artist in many location and venue. With its more and more popularity, Tri Minh has established as the first truly electronic artist in Vietnam. As quoted from article printed in local Time magazine: “With a boundless supply of energy and a pronounced lack of preciousness, Minh is pushing ahead with his plans, perhaps someday soon, this self-styled chameleon will develop a profile that is sufficiently visible to suit his talents”.

In addition Tri Minh has, during the recent years, become renowned as an avant-garde musician and sound artist merging electronic, electro sounds and programming with traditional Vietnamese music and lyrics in combination with modern installations and performances. And had perform together or as part of with many international artists from Denmark, UK, US, Sweden, Belgium, Poland, Hong Kong, China, Philippine, Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore and has performed in Barcelona-Spain, Goteborg-Sweden, Copenhagen-Denmark, Cologne, Berlin-Germany, Taipei-Taiwan.
