“The art industry in Malaysia is reflected in its diverse multiculturalism: from Malay, Chinese, and Indians, and to diverse groups of indigenous natives. The art industry is segregated, and the government support and funds operate within its own structure. Thus, independent practitioners are isolated in Malaysia. There have been government agencies working on supporting independent practitioners but as their focus is more on the creative economy, the direction might differ from solely looking into arts and cultural growth. In order to survive, independent practitioners had been drawing resources from individual connections and developed creative entrepreneurial models through their own endeavor. The local ecosystem can be categorized into non-profit, for-profit, and amateur, often cross path and intertwined. E-Jan is much interested in examining multiculturalism, interculturalism and transculturalism, how each of them crosses the other and in understanding the dynamic along the development. Her keywords are Diversity, Flexibility, and Coexist.”

E-Jan Tan

Asian Producers’ Platform, Toccata Studio

Bio

E-Jan Tan is a creative producer in Malaysia; a Co-Founder of Toccata Studio. Toccata Studio is a non-profit organization, a performing arts collective, and a creative “incubator” for multidisciplinary creation. They focus on time and changes with the languages of contemporary artistic innovation and technology.

E-Jan is interested in exploring arts as a future-shaping force where the boundaries of performing arts, visual arts, and literature are adaptable to other factors. It shaped her strength beyond the broad international exchange and collaboration projects. She is now a member of the steering committee of Asian Producers’ Platform Camp as she participated in all previously.

Organization

Asian Producers’ Platform (APP) is a network of performing arts producers established in 2014. It creates a strong network of Asian producers across the region, and shares and develops the work of artists, professional skills, and cultural practices. Members have conducted in-depth research, created projects together, and developed professional practices and networks across the region. Its Camp incorporates a mix of producers who need support to develop their intercultural practice. Previous Camps were done in 2014 in Korea, 2015 in Taiwan, 2016 in Japan, 2017 in Australia, 2018 in Indonesia and 2019 in Hong Kong, Macau, Guangzhou.

Toccata Studio (002099890-X) is a registered not-for-profit organization, a performing arts collective, and an incubator for the creative and the multidisciplinary. We create innovative works that centers art as a future-shaping force where the boundaries of performing arts, visual arts and literature are fluid and pliant.

We focus on themes of time and change, speaking to these concepts with the languages of contemporary artistic innovation and technology. We are creators and developers of performing arts. Our work is a reflective mirror and an answering voice, looking and conversing closely with the universe at large. Like hands, building and breaking in growth and preservation.

We hold the past, walk with the contemporary and mold the future.

Toccata Studio performs research with art as it’s methodology.
